A group of scientists at the University of Lethbridge (Alberta, Canada) revealed to the public that they are currently working a drug which might help gambling addicts. The name of the drug that is being worked on is Naltrexone and it is often used to treat addicted to alcohol and narcotics. This medicine is able to control the feeling which pervades the brain when the addict satisfies his urge. One of the researchers, professor Darren Christensen stated, “This kind of medication could be very successful, notably if an addict has extremely high urge to gamble and the other types of treatment, such as counselling, for example, do not help”. The group of people agreed to participate in experiment while taking Naltrexone, during which a series of MRIs will be taken, thus allowing scientists to record any changes in their brain structure. Those who already take drug as a part of experiment stating about some success in changing their tackling habit. A long time gambler with problems Craig Munro said that because of gambling his life became a complete mess, but after taking the medicine he is seeing some positive changes. “It feels like a mountain was lifted off my shoulders”, he said.
